Icelandic Sheepdog

The American Kennel Club has recognized three new breeds for AKC-sanctioned breed competitions in the US – the Icelandic Sheepdog (photo below), the Cane Corso and the Leonberger.

The AKC announced in the Today Show that the three will join the 164 breeds already registered with the organization. Although new to the AKC list, the three breeds have been around for quite some time already.

The Icelandic sheepdog is part of the spitz family, which includes chow chows and the American Eskimo and is commonly used to herd sheep, cattle and horses. Icelandic sheepdogs are regarded as one of the oldest dog breeds in the world.

Meanwhile, the lion-maned Leonberger, named after the town of Leonberg, Germany. It has a long fur which made German artists favor, often using them as models. They’re athletic and have been used as water rescue dogs and been trained to jump out of helicopters.

The Cane Corso is one of the most rare dog breeds out there. It’s a member of the mastiff family. It was highly prized in its native Italy for hunting difficult prey such as boar and fighting alongside soldiers in ancient battles.
