Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton was expected to miss six to eight weeks after breaking his right hand on his head dive into the home plate Tuesday, dash AL MVP later called "stupid."
Hamilton tried to score from third on a foul popup near the dug-out Detroit in the queue. Third baseman Brandon Inge and catcher Victor Martinez and chased the ball, resulting in a plate exposed.
Inge made a catch and then threw the ball to Martinez, who got back in time to tag Hamilton.
"It was a stupid play," Hamilton said. "All the time the ball was in the air, the coach yelled:" Go where no one is home, and I thought: "I do not want to do it, something happens.
"But I listened to my coach," he said, referring to the third base coach Dave Anderson. " It was too aggressive. Maybe if they were both close to me, but they had every angle to cut me off, and the only way to avoid the tag in this situation is to go upside down. "
Rangers general manager Jon Daniels defended his decision to send Anderson Hamilton.
"We play an aggressive style of baseball," he said. "Chances of getting hurt on that play is minimal."
Rangers Hamilton said without a displaced fracture of the humerus in the upper arm, just below the shoulders. He is not expected to swing the bat during the month.
Branched out: The Dodgers placed shortstop Rafael branched at a 15-day disabled list after he broke his left thumb, clicking on the third ground for theft in the fifth inning of Los Angeles 6.1 victory over the Giants on Monday night.
