Sea Turtles Make Surprising Migration When Young: Sea turtles are known for their incredible migrations, swimming, long distance ocean to return to his homeland to hatch their young.
But it turns out that these beloved marine reptiles do another migration at an earlier age than the one of the researchers described as "even more surprising that the" migration of turtles that are older.
"They do it once, but [the migration] can be much more than they make spawning migrations as adults, and can include tens of thousands of kilometers," said Peter Meylan, Professor of Natural Science Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. , in a statement.
Meylan, with its partner research and wife Anne Meylan of fish and wildlife of Florida Research Institute, recently compiled data, the monitoring of sea turtles in an article published in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History.
They found that young sea turtles travel long distances for very long before they are fully developed.
Hatched green turtles in Costa Rica have been observed in remote locations - Barbados, North Carolina and Bermuda - before leaving to spend their adulthoods in Nicaragua.
"Bermuda is a place where young turtles go into growth," said Meylan. "They arrived there after living in the ocean. In the waters of Bermuda, they become the size of a plate the size of a washing tank, and then move to different habitats of adults," he said.
The researchers concluded that the data tagging studies show that the migration of young people can be a dangerous time for young tortoises, as well as the corridors they travel the ocean may need protection official.
Some species of sea turtles, as the largest turtle in the world, a huge leatherback, are in critical condition.
