Watch TV: "Do Not Believe B - Apartment 23" - a Postmodern Prime Time?

TV Watch: ‘Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23′ — Postmodern Prime-Time?: The new comedy Do not believe B - Apartment 23, the first last night on ABC, probably not the funniest show on TV, so silly, laugh out loud, no, but it can also be the last. And it's not because the pilot had seen the first time a few hours earlier. This is one of the most modern network sitcoms of our time, with the help of cross-media joke in a way that would have been impossible a few years ago.

At first glance, the story matches the pattern of the city show a little girl lost in a big city (spoilers ahead). Jolie in June (Dreama Walker) goes all the way from Indiana found that the mortgage brokerage firm that was hired and paid for his apartment, went under. Unemployed and homeless, she is responsible for a number of wacky neighbor, wanted ads, before I found what seems to be the perfect place, a nice apartment unreal to those who like a large flat mate. Neighbor-seekers, Chloe (Krysten Ritter), even snacks. Apartment number, of course, 23, and, yes, Chloe is really B - (woman), came up with a plan to ensure the rent for the first month and last, and then act like such crazy to walk naked, theft, privacy invasion, that the reduction in placement and tracks. So begins a short war in which the response takes on sale in June and Chloe ottoman piece of furniture that just contains a long list of Chinese energy pills that Chloe is selling on the black market. It is thanks to the restoration of communication ottoman, two women, Chloe decides to allow to stay in June, and that friendship is established a strange and unstable, creating a wide arc of the series.

Not what you want to be friends with one of them. It only takes one episode to realize that simplicity in June may be a little pathetic, and Chloe pulls some tricks that are oblique to the right outside Bizarro unpleasant (eg, getting drunk 13-year old and skipping on the tab bar). Shows how the Bureau has learned the hard way that the public, at least in the U.S., a friendly face, and it will be interesting to see if you can not trust B - loses some of the harm, as the season progresses.

But this is perhaps the most interesting aspect of this series. An important role, as you can see that Chloe's best friend is James Van Der Beek, and he plays well, James Van Der Beek. Van Der Beek appears in and out of laughs, but even if he scored a few funny moments in the pilot, including the funniest bit in the evening, with the participation of the Vietnamese advertising an energy drink, which includes the line "Dawson Moon" This humor is not so for screen, of course, you can see Do not believe B -. If you missed that Van Der Beek was, until recently, but you will not receive in-jokes. the show seems to be fine with that.

While you're vaguely aware that James Van Der Beek of Dawson played on Dawson's Creek, humor is a fictional character actor with this role is to pick up the ladies will not be lost on you. However, the real life of Van Der Beek also spent the last few years to bring the character-based meme (an earthquake of this self-referential, he plays here), there is absolutely out of Dawson Creek, and the apartment 23. There are no references to the show all that extra infamous Dawson Creek animated GIF, Van Der Beek of Dawson creeked does not believe as he did in Scary Movie, Vandermemes, but it's funny or Die viewers who are familiar with the viral load extra layer of humor in everything what's going on here. It is no coincidence that Van Der Beek was chosen to play this particular game the actor himself. Becomes Ouroboros, and while the knowledge of experts do not have to follow the plot Do not believe B - the show is not as impressive, if you can not admit that the tail of a snake in her mouth, in its essence.

Do not believe B - it is certainly not the first show of its observers prefer to have some cultural awareness outside prime time, but this may be the first off the risk of viewers who do not get the irony is not all bits of background. Sometimes a complex cultural links may not work perfectly. Wasteland is very good. But not B - Apartment 23 is pushing the envelope on new extreme, Paris-based James Van Der Beek rabid fans will tune in each week to see him take the art of recursion to a whole new level. This is pretty impressive at the moment, a b - and her neighbors have their game to succeed. The joke is not a comedy make.
