The son, 20-year-old former NBA player Nick Van Exel has been charged with capital murder in the death of a close friend, Dallas police said Thursday.
Nickey Maxwell Van Exel was arrested late Wednesday and jailed on $ 1 million bond in the death of Bradley Bassey Eyo, 23. Police said Eyo was found Sunday with a gunshot wound to his upper body near Lake Ray Hubbard, a suburb of Dallas.
Authorities later determined that Eyo was killed in a house in the suburb of Dallas, Garland and his body was dumped near the lake, police said.
Paul Johnson, the youth's attorney Van Exel, told The Associated Press that his client told police he shot Eyo, a longtime friend and neighbor, while the two were engaged in "play" with a shotgun. Van Exel said he did not know the gun, which belonged to his stepfather, has been charged.
After the shooting, Van Exel "panic" and moved the body, Johnson said. Van Exel also threw the gun into a creek, and has not been found, he said.
"It's a real sad situation," said Johnson. "Emotions are running high, and, of course, recognize that some very bad decisions were made on the answer."
Johnson said he was contacted by the family Van Exel on Tuesday and immediately began working with the authorities. The young Van Exel has not yet appeared in court or plead.
The elder Van Exel played for the Dallas Mavericks from 2001 to 2003 as part of an NBA career that spanned 13 seasons and six teams. He now works as a player development instructor for the Atlanta Hawks, a work that began in September.
A call to the media relations department Hawks by the AP was not immediately returned.
Johnson said he talked to the old Van Exel and that he and others who knew Eyo was deeply saddened.
"Bradley was as part of the family," said Johnson.
