Alireza Pahlavi, son of the former Shah of Iran, died yesterday morning at his home in Boston, Massachusetts, a family spokesman. The spokesman said it was a suicide.
Pahlavi, 44, was the son of the late Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, who was ousted in 1979 and died the following year in exile in Cairo, Egypt.
"It's an immense pain that we would like to inform our countrymen of the death of Prince Alireza Pahlavi," said the family website.
"Like millions of young Iranians, he was also deeply concerned about all the evils befallen their beloved homeland, as well as carry the burden of the loss of a father and a sister in her young life. Despite that fought for years to overcome his pain, finally succumbed. "
The family learned of the death on Tuesday at 2:30 am, said spokesman Ahmad Oveyssi.
Born in Tehran on July 28, 1966, attended schools Pahlavi in Iran before coming to the United States in 1979 during the Iranian revolution. He earned a B.A. Princeton University in 1984 and an MBA from Columbia University in 1992 and attended Harvard University in pursuit of a doctorate in ancient Iranian Studies.
In June 2001, the sister of Pahlavi, Leila Pahlavi, also committed suicide.
He is survived by his mother, Farah Pahlavi, his older brother, Reza, his sister and his half sister Farahnaz Shahnaz.
