Controversial Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, came under fire again today as it became apparent that he is being investigated for extortion and prostitution.
The probe of Berlusconi, 74, focuses on his relationship with a dancer named Karima El Mahroug, then 17, who was invited to a party organized in his home last year.
Berlusconi's current term in office has been dogged by accusations continued participation of women - but somehow has managed to cling to power, even surviving a marriage without a vote of confidence in Parliament that received by riots on the street.
His lawyers confirmed that it is being investigated in a case of prostitution, which they call "absurd and groundless."
Piero Longo and Nicolo Ghedini said the research represents a "very serious interference with private life of the prime minister."
It said the allegations "have been refuted by all witnesses and persons directly involved.
The prostitution charge centers on the allegation that he had sex with belly dancing at some point between February and May last year and is punishable by imprisonment of between six months to three years.
