The governor of the province's most populous and powerful of Pakistan, Punjab, was killed Tuesday in the capital, Islamabad.
Salman Taseer was shot by a member of his personal security team, while Kohs Market, an elegant district of the capital popular with foreigners, officials said.
"[The security guard] confessed that he killed the governor himself because he had called the blasphemy law a black law, " said Interior Minister Rehman Malik.
Mr. Taseer drew the ire of Islamists for his outspoken opposition to the blasphemy laws in the country that have recently led to a Christian woman to be sentenced to death for allegedly insulting the Prophet Muhammad. The killing comes at a time of political crisis for the country, as the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), led by the government, in which Taseer was a key leader, struggles to stay in power after a key partner leave the government coalition on Monday.
