Mexican singer Sergio Vega, AKA El Shaka, started the day explaining he was not dead. Just hours later, he was.
El Shaka was the victim of the horrendous drug violence that has rocked Mexico to its core.
“It’s happened to me for years now, someone tells a radio station or a newspaper I’ve been killed, or suffered an accident. And then I have to call my dear mum, who has heart trouble, to reassure her.”
El Shaka said in a statement.
The 40 year old gupero singer was shot by a drug gang as he was making his way to a concert. Gruperos sing ballads that are based on, and glam up, the international drug trade that keeps the money flowing into Mexico.
Six other Gruperos have been killed within the last 6 months, but none as widely known and followed as the U.S.-based El Shaka.
