Agreement to avert government shutdown

The United States government is expected to start Saturday was averted after the Democrats and Republicans reached an agreement only a few hours before midnight, to reduce costs.

Ruling would have caused serious disruptions throughout the country and can prevent the fragile economic recovery. Hundreds of federal agencies that have been closed and about 800,000 federal employees face suspension.

The agreement came after several days of talks between Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner, the leader in the Senate Democrat Harry Reid. The agreement seemed to be agonizingly close several times but was not completed until Friday night.

Boehner, an hour before midnight, told reporters in Congress: "I am glad that Senator Reid and the White House came to an agreement that will reduce costs and preserve open government."

It was the first federal government shutdown in 1995-96, when there was confrontation between the Republicans and the Clinton White House.

Barack Obama broke his schedule for Friday, including the beginning of the weekend's family in Virginia, with an emphasis on negotiations with the Republicans. He had hoped to reach a compromise on Friday morning, but negotiations dragged on throughout the day.Read Full Story At 12USPOST
