In a remarkable development, which has just announced that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has appointed his security chief, Omar Suleiman, as vice-president.
In its 30 years in power, Mubarak has refused to appoint a vice-president, does not want anyone to get ideas about who would succeed him. Mr Mubarak himself, an air force chief earlier, was vice-president Anwar Sadat and was succeeded in office when Mr. Sadat was assassinated in September 1981.
