What Happened At Dumbarton Bridge

A couple of police negotiators ended a tense standoff for two hours when he convinced a distraught man not to jump from the Dumbarton Bridge late Tuesday night.
The suicide attempt may travel snarled rush hour as the authorities closed the bridge to traffic. access was blocked eastbound on University Avenue and Bayfront Expressway in Menlo Park.
"We must balance the safety of this type and the safety of motorists," the sergeant of the California Highway Patrol. Trent Cross said Tuesday. "It is difficult to negotiate with the traffic behind you."
Police received several calls shortly before 14:40 on a man who seemed about to jump from the top of the span, Menlo Park, said police spokeswoman Nicole Acker. At one point, the man was on the other side of the railing.
One of the friends of man also called dispatchers and said his friend was angry and upset, "said Cruz.
The authorities at first could not be closer than 20 feet to the man. However, two police negotiators in Menlo Park called to the scene managed to speak for him, and he was placed in protective custody at about 4:35 pm, Acker said.
While the man was not injured, was taken to San Mateo Medical Center for a psychological evaluation, Acker said. She refused to discuss details about the man.
