Ashley Turton was a star at the Capitol. She was a chief of staff and later a lobbyist. It was also the mother of three young children. Friends call her "wonderful" and "charming." Turton husband, Dan, is the White House liaison to the House of Representatives.
But something strange happened on Capitol Hill home Monday morning and heard next.
"I heard enough noise to wake me was unusual," said neighbor Harry Lowe.
A little before 5 am, neighbors reported a garage fire, but firefighters found it more than that. We found the body of Ashley Turton in a BMW in the garage. The police described as an accident that resulted in a fatality.
Dan Turton and children of the couple, three were safe inside the house. Neighbors said Dan Turton did not realize that his wife was trapped in the garage.
Ashley Turton was a member of the board of the National Democratic Club. He had been chief of staff to Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut.
In a statement, DeLauro wrote:. "She was particularly special as she was the pioneer chief of staff who knew how to make the House of Representatives working for the people she was a leader and comrade in arms to the staff of many .. She was a member of our family and her mourn. "
Turton left the Capitol and moved just up Pennsylvania Avenue to work as a lobbyist for Progress Energy.
Progress CEO Bill Johnson released this statement: "Ashley was a valued employee whose vision and hard work had been instrumental in many of our legislative and regulatory affairs. She was also a dear friend to many of us and this news is very difficult take. I know we will all support her husband, children and parents in our thoughts and prayers. Today is a momentous day for us as employees of Progress Energy. Ashley's tragic death reminds us all keep perspective in all things. "
Ashley Turton company, Progress Energy, announced a merger Monday with Duke Energy. If approved, would create the largest utility in the United States. FOX 5 he said he planned to leave the house early Monday for a meeting related to the merger.
